Overview: Located on the grounds of the Fairmont Orchid megaresort, the Puakō Malama Petroglyph Preserve contains a remarkable collection of rock art along a short twenty minute trail.

Getting to the Trailhead: On Hwy. 19 north of Kailua-Kona and south of Kawaihae, look for the entrance to the Mauna Lani resort between mile markers 73 and 74 (Mauna Lani Drive). Follow Mauna Lani Drive and take your first right. Follow this road toward the Fairmont Orchid. Near the Fairmont Orchid, turn right at a signed road to parking for the Puakō Petroglyph Preserve. Park at the roundabout parking area. You don't need to be a guest of either of these hotels to tour the Preserve.

The Hike: Simply follow the paved trail through the Preserve. Stay on the trail and don't cross fences. There are plentiful Kiawe trees along the trail, whose thorns can penetrate hard rubber soles. Don't underestimate them.
